The images and logos for Manitowoc Airshow feature famous WWII fighter pilot
Major Richard I. Bong,
who was best known for his military service in the US Army Air Corps. He flew a P-38 Lightning and was awarded the US Army Medal of Honor in 1944. Major Bong was born and raised in Poplar, in
northwestern Wisconsin, and the Superior, WI airport is named after him. He is also the namesake of the Bong Recreation Area, located in southeastern Wisconsin. This is a beautiful state-owned facility with
many recreational activities.
